Slovenia Handmade Map

Map of Slovenia, the ancient tradition around the production of honey from this central European country, was my main inspiration when drawing it.

In Slovenia there is the carniola bee, native Slovenian bee, which is considered one of the most widespread honey bees in the world, which I drew on the right margin of the map. Bees have an important role in nature and people in Slovenia are well aware of their incredible mission and that is why beekeeping is firmly anchored in Slovenian tradition. For this reason I considered that a map of Slovenia had to reflect this interesting beekeeping tradition.

Inside the map I drew a scene adapted from a honeyboard (Panjska končnica), where you see a carriage driven by a horse, in which a dragon travels and a rooster as an engine. These boards serve as decoration of the hives (Čebelar). The oldest panel we know dates from 1758 and shows a representation of the Virgin. The purpose of these paintings was to ward off evils with celestial beings who were to safeguard bees from witchcraft and calamities. There are endless situations represented in these tables, such as, the world upside down, the hunted hunter; duel between Pegan and Lambergar, among others.
On the other hand, in the lower right margin I drew the Čebelar or beehive, that construction represents the typical little house used as a beehive, where the colored rectangles that I drew there are the honey boards (Panjska končnica).

Around the map I drew the honeyloaves, which mostly have heart shapes, these are made with floral motifs and some carry messages as part of the decoration. With this map I try to reflect this Slovenian tradition that vindicates bees, a tradition so important that in Slovenia the initiative was born to proclaim May 20 International Bee Day, which was approved by the United Nations organization.
